VO2 Max Testing in Bergen County
VO2 max testing is the gold standard for measuring your aerobic fitness and how efficiently your body uses oxygen during exercise. At Alliance Performance in Fair Lawn, our Bergen County members get access to a precise VO2 Max test that measures oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide output while you work on a treadmill or bike. This data helps you understand your current fitness level, determine training zones, and track progress as you get stronger. If you’re an athlete chasing performance, VO2 Max testing gives you objective numbers to guide your training and understand your cardiorespiratory health.
You arrive and get fitted with a heart rate monitor and breathing mask to accurately measure oxygen intake and heart rate throughout the test.
You begin exercising as intensity gradually increases in stages. The test starts at low intensity, then increments every 2–3 minutes as you work harder on the treadmill or bike.
You push until you reach maximal effort and cannot continue. Intensity keeps increasing until you reach your VO2 Max, the point where your body cannot use more oxygen despite working harder.
You receive a detailed report with your VO2 Max score and training zones (fitness classification and personalized training) to guide your workouts.
What to Expect from Our VO2 Max Testing in Fair Lawn
You’ll wear a mask connected to a metabolic cart while you walk, then run, on a treadmill or pedal on a resistance bike. Every couple of minutes, the intensity ticks up to a faster pace, a steeper incline, or more resistance. The mask tracks exactly how much oxygen you’re taking in while the intensity picks up and how much carbon dioxide you’re producing. That data, paired with a continuous heart rate reading, is what tells us the point where your body switches from primarily burning fat to relying on carbs and eventually where it hits its absolute ceiling for oxygen use.

Benefits of VO2 Max Testing
VO2 max testing helps you know your exact oxygen capacity and where your heart rate zones fall to optimize your training, improve athletic performance, and track your fitness progress accurately over time, so you always know where you stand and how to get better with each workout. For athletes juggling practice, conditioning, and competition, that data is the difference between training harder and training smarter. We help you build a conditioning program around your actual physiology instead of a generic plan built for someone else’s body.
VO2 Max testing provides a gold-standard measurement of your aerobic fitness so you know your exact baseline.
Your results give you heart rate and pace zones tailored to your body for smarter, more effective training.
Regular testing shows how your aerobic capacity improves with consistent training and recovery efforts.
Higher VO2 Max scores correlate with better heart health and longer lifespan, making it an important health metric.

VO2 Max Testing FAQs
VO2 Max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise, measured in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/kg/min). It’s considered the gold standard for measuring aerobic fitness and cardiorespiratory health. A higher VO2 Max means your body can convert oxygen to energy more efficiently, which helps fuel exercise and strengthen your heart and lungs over time. This measurement tells you how well your body can do hard work.
VO2 Max is measured through a graded exercise test where you exercise on a treadmill or bike while wearing a mask that measures oxygen inhaled and carbon dioxide exhaled. The intensity increases gradually every 2–3 minutes until you reach maximal effort. During the test, your heart rate, oxygen consumption, and breathing are tracked continuously. The test stops when you can’t continue despite the workload increasing, and that point gives you your true VO2 Max score.
A good VO2 Max depends on your age, gender, and fitness level. For most adults, average scores range from 30 to 40 mL/kg/min for sedentary people, 40 to 50 for moderately active people, and 50+ for athletes. Younger, fitter people naturally score higher. What matters most is where you stand relative to your age group and improving your score over time with consistent training rather than hitting a specific number.
You can improve VO2 Max through high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and endurance training. Working at 90-95% of your maximum heart rate for short intervals, then recovering, is one of the most effective ways. Combining interval training with steady-state cardio often brings the best gains. Also, improving your nutrition, sleep, and stress management and losing weight can boost VO2 Max since it’s measured relative to body weight.
